I halt my next step when I realize that in my hectic need of putting as much distance between Chase and myself as I could, I ended up walking straight into the dark Oakley Woods. There isn’t even a bit of moonlight to show me the way back, since a dark cloud has overshadowed its bright light completely.

I couldn’t have gone that far.

Could I?

In my pensive state, I can’t be sure.

I turn around and hope at least that I came into the woods in a straight line. However, as I walk back, I’m really not sure. Everything looks the same to me. Nothing really grabbing my attention like I’d passed it before. I bite my inner cheek as I continue on, when a sudden shiver runs down my spine.

It’s the same one I got a few days ago back at school, and again when I walked home. I had tossed the paranoid sensation away, just calling it PTSD from years of being bullied, but somehow my gut tells me this is different. I got the same haunting feeling when I walked into that room back at the Hamilton estate.

It felt like true evil lived there. It was so prominent, like it licked my skin, crawled up my body and stole the air from my lungs. Only when Chase was in the room did I feel safe. How moronic is that?

I hug myself to keep my fright away, and keep on walking.

It’s all in your head, Ava. You’re fine. Just walk back to the mansion and ask Stone if she wouldn’t mind taking you home. That’s what you should have done in the first place.

I swallow dryly, and put one foot in front of the other, praying all the while that my footsteps are taking me home. The large oak trees taunt me as I pretend I’m not scared out of my wits. The tips of my ears heat up when I hear something snap behind me.

“Screw this,” I belt out, letting my fear run rampant.

I begin to speed up my steps, hoping that sooner or later the loud music coming from the party will guide my way back. When I hear another snap of a branch, I’m no longer power walking. I’m fucking running. My heart leaps to my throat as I do my best not to get even more lost than I already am. Then out of the blue, a shadow springs up in front of me, startling me to death. I yell for help, only for my assailant to wrap his palm over my mouth, making sure no one hears my cry. I’m pulled around, my back hitting a firm chest forcefully, but when the light scent of green apples reach my senses, I almost weep in relief.

“Who are you running from, Ava?” Chase asks, his breath tickling my ear.

He doesn’t expect an answer since his palm is still firmly planted over my mouth. I barely have enough room to turn my head to the side, but through my peripheral, I see his gaze scrutinize the woods behind us.
